William P. Stamey, M.D.

Dr. Stamey was born in Memphis, Tennessee and attended the University of Memphis, where he studied music theory from 1985 – 1988, and microbiology from 1993 - 1997, graduating cum laude from these combined studies. He received his M.D. from the Quillen College of Medicine in Johnson City, Tennessee in 2002.

In 2003, he finished his internship in internal medicine at Johnson City Medical Center. His first year of neurology training was spent at the University of South Florida at Tampa, concluding in 2004. He completed his neurology residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas in 2006, during which time he spent six months studying electromyography (EMG). Following residency, Dr. Stamey completed a fellowship in movement disorders at Baylor in 2007. He is a board certified neurologist, and an attending staff member at Maine Medical Center and Mercy Hospital in Portland .

During his fellowship, Dr. Stamey gained training and expertise in movement disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, essential tremor, Tourette syndrome, dystonia, the use of botulinum toxin (such as Botox) and deep brain stimulation for various neurological conditions. He is also very interested in memory and cognitive problems such as Alzheimer disease, as well as neuropathy, myasthenia gravis, ALS and EMG.

Lastly, Dr. Stamey was recognized several times during training for his commitments to patient care, advocacy and education, qualities which he feels are vital in the doctor-patient relationship.
